With competition from Volkswagen’s Scirocco, and Datsun’s 200SX, Mazda’s 626 coupe remained a best buy among Japanese Coupes for its final year as a rear driver, lacking only horsepower to be one of the best in its class for the money. Upgraded a bit to make room for the GLC sedan, the 626 came in a high state of trim, making for an open road package that verged on posh. Although the layout was conventional front engine/rear drive, the 626 held its own with the best on back roads, and the 2-liter engine had a strong affinity for turbocharging.
