When Volkswgen first came to America it sold only small, fuel-efficient cars. A few decades later they introduced larger and plusher vehicles. But even the bigger VW’s gave decent fuel economy.
The 1982 Volkswagens were the most fuel efficient models yet. Every new VW with a manual transmission had the firm’s upshift indicator light, which told you when to shift to a higher gear for a big economy increase with no loss of engine pulling power.
The big news for 1982, however, was the introduction of the Scirocco. Somewhat larger and plusher than its predecessor, yet gave better fuel mileage.
Volkswagen’s sporty Scirocco had an all-new body that was longer and more rounded than the original, with a 10 percent reduction in aerodynamic drag. The extra length incorporated more crush area in front and rear, and allowed more room inside. Aerodynamic tweaks included an integral front spoiler, recessed rain gutters, and a unique spoiler running across the lower rear-window glass.
