01983: Bumping Along The Baja 1000 1982 Chevy S10
How tough was S-10? Tough enough to win its class at Baja not once but twice, beating out Ford Ranger and a field of imports both times.
First it was the Baja 500 off-road race, a 488 mile torture test over rugged mountains, desert washes, rocky flats and coastline. The modified Chevrolet S-10 4×4 owned and outfitted by Joe MacPherson Chevrolet, Irvine, California, completed the course in 10 hours and 20 minutes to win its class. Of the other 12 Class Seven trucks that started the race along with S-10, only six finished.
Next came the Baja 1,000 over 900 miles of the same kind of torturous terrain and once again, a modified S-10 V-6 owned by the Northern California Chevy Dealers Association was first across the finish line in the Class Seven category, outperforming another full field of competitors that included Ford Ranger and the imports.
MacPherson, not content to rest on his laurels, was at the Baja 1,000, too with an entry of a different sort, a stock production S-10 4×4 V-6 entered in Class Three and pitted against larger V-8 powered 4-wheel drive vehicles. Even up against the modified V-8’s, the stock production S-10 showed its toughness with an impressive third place finish.
