The 1983 Monte Carlo carried on with the handsome 1981 styling for 1983, and found more than 91,000 buyers for the Sport Coupe. The big news for the model year was the surprise return of the ‘droop snoot’ special, SS sport coupe, an assertively trimmed springtime arrival that cranked out 180 horsepower from a high-performance 5.0-liter V8. The SS provided the sort of performance that hadn’t been seen in a Detroit mid-size for ten years. Designed both for NASCAR racing and to help renew buyer interest in performance, it carried a base price of $10,474. Production problems limited sales to just 4714.
