The second energy crisis in 1979 devastated General Motors and its Chevy division truck sales. Chevy and its competition struggled to make their trucks more economical. The Chevy half-ton C-10 had received a major overhaul leading up to 1983. Overall Chevy tried to reinvent a more marketable truck. It analyzed what it could do to make the truck body more fuel efficient. Ideas ranged from redesigning the engines to using different types of metals to make the trucks more aerodynamic. . The trucks lost from 80 to 300 pounds by using new low-alloy steel body panels and lightweight window glass. Also, the 1983 C-10 had a new engine a 305-cubic-inch, 5.0-liter, high-compression V8 with spark control. The spark control was designed to improve fuel economy and performance. The engine had a compression ratio of 9.2:1 and was rated at 160 horsepower with 235 pound-feet
