01983 Ford Escort GT Test Drive
Perhaps the most intriguing thing to ponder about the evolution of the Escort is that Ford had the car absolutely spot-on, bulls-eye right from the very beginning – in Europe. Here in the US, it was a different story. When the much heralded World Car came riding in on a triumphal wave of ballyhoo, it was simply not the same car. Then handling was quirky, the beautifully designed 1.6 CVH engine had been de–smogged to the point of suffocation, and the cosmetics had been given just enough traditional American old-school styling tweaks to take the edge off the fresh appearance of the Euro Escorts basic design.
But that was 1981, and if there was any sign that Ford was not the same company it was two or three years before, that sin was FoMoCo’s new ability to respond quickly and positively to challenges. By way of video, we offer the 1983 Ford Escort GT – and the fact that Ford made the Escort the best-selling car in the country.
