41983 Ford Thunderbird Promo
The Thunderbird became a lot more exciting with its landmark “aero” redesign for 1983, dramatically signaling Ford Motor Comany’s turn to clean, low drag styling. The 142hp Turbo Coupe was the hottest of the three models offered. Buyers approved-sales nearly tirpled, hitting cclose to 122,000 sold. The standard model offered V-6 or V-8 power for $9,000-$10,000.
It is sad to say no American car builds cars like this in any segment. That car was popular because it did something right.
You’re absolutely right.
Today there’s so much choice, so many niche-mobiles crowd the streets and still… there’s nothing really appealing in a reasonable price.
Those Tbird / Cougars were just that – a nice and comfy car for middle class. Not very sporty, but they were not supposed to be, very comfy and classy. Nice, just nice.
Today every manufacturer tries to sell you a “sports car” that was developed at the Nurburgring or other race track, but do you get something from that R&D? Hardly…
Those cars are far too stiff, too harsh and quite uncomfortable. And many buyers look for comfort, style and looks and don’t give a damn for cornering speeds.
The last true personal coupe – in my own opinion- was Bentley’s Continental, but it played in a totally different league.
Pity we don’t have T-Bird / Cougar anymore…
I LIKE 1983-93 FORD THUNDERBIRD TURBO/SUPERCOUPE 2.3L I-4 AND 3.8L TURBO V6 MODERN MUSCLE CAR AWESOME 😀 REMINED ME OF GLORY DAYS NASCAR WINSTON CUP SERIES BILL ELLIOTT DRIVE #9 AND #11 CAR
TOTALLY AGREE ON ALL COUNTS with the 2nd post. I had an 84 Turbo Coupe in manual trim and I loved it to pieces. My next favorite was the 87 with the redesigned beak and the ton of optional features available including the adjustable ride control. Actually the turbo coupe and super coupes thirds from 85-95 were pretty badass.
