01983 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Test Drive
The Thunderbird became a lot more exciting with its landmark, eye-catching “aero” redesign for 1983 with an egg crate grille and wraparound headlamps, dramatically signaling Ford Motor Company’s turn to clean low drag styling. The 10th generation T-bird was also the smallest since the original two-seater. Immediately popular, buyers approved with sales nearly tripling sales from 45,000, hitting close to 122,000 sold. Power came from four and six cylinder engines, plus the hottest of the three models offered, a 142hp turbo four in an under $12k Turbo Coupe designed for the sports car set. The standard model offered V-6 or V-8 power for $9,000-$10,000.
