1983 Oldsmobile Firenza Hatchback Test Drive

Oldsmobile’s J-car offered in three body styles for 1983: 4-door sedan, 2-door hatchback, and a new station wagon. Fitting the Brazilian-built 1.8-liter overhead-cam and 2.0-liter Chevrolet 4-cylinder engines finally added needed life to the corporate J-cars. The Isuzu 5-speed transaxle made that added power much more usable as well. Both power plants would be ordered with a 3-speed automatic transaxle. As with the other J’s, the 1.8-liter OHV engine was dropped. New station wagon bodystyle was available in two versions, Firenza Cruiser or LX Cruiser. Both were offered with optional split back folding rear seats.
