Lincoln now had a six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine as an option on the Mark VII and Continental sedan. It was the first oil burner in the luxury car’s history. Made by BMW, the engine carried a price tag of $1,200 more than the standard 302 cubic inch gasoline V8. Included in the price was a four speed overdrive automatic transmission made by ZF in Europe. The engine and transmission were brought over as a package engineered to fit the Lincoln prestige models. The only other car to use the diesel was the BMW 5-series car sold in Europe. Lincoln executives figured on a two-year payoff in fuel savings for buyers of the turbo diesel, using 12,000 miles per year with a diesel/gas price differential of eight cents per gallon. EPA numbers were highly impressive: 25 mpg city, 30 mpg highway.
