Looking for a comeback from its slump in the early 1980’s, Ford motor company would introduce two new front-wheel-drive, mid-size models in the spring of 1983 as 1984 models. Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz, identical except for name plates, were built as two- and four-door sedans. They featured a host of engineering innovations, including a new four-cylinder engine, unique rear suspension, refined automatic transmission, highly aerodynamic body, and unusually quiet passenger compartment.
