01984 Toyota Camry Test Drive
Settle into Toyota’s new oversized compact, the Camry, it was like soaking in a hot tub: it’s warm and comfortable, and it had lots of room to spread out.
The larger-car market was Toyota’s target for this mid-priced compact. All other Toyotas, even the luxurious Cressida, were classified as subcompacts. “The Camry was an upscale replacement for the Corona,” said company VP Norm Lean at the time.
At the same time, Toyota was trending to front-wheel drive. Camry’s 2.0-liter was transversely mounted, all but eliminating the passenger compartment hump and making for more than 42 inches of front seat legroom. The three person rear seat was similarly opened up, with nearly 35 inches of legroom, 55 inches of interior width, adn an average 38 inches of headroom.
There was nothing sporty about this soft sitting sedan but that was the way it was planned. Even with the five speed manual transmission, which took full advantage of the engine’s 92 horsepower, the lack of zip was clear.
