1984 Toyota Corolla LE Test Drive
By 1983, Toyota had sold nearly 2.5 million Corollas in the U.S. since introducing the line here in 1968. Continued success was a matter of periodic modernization programs, which in 1981 included the company’s first front-drive passenger car, the Corolla Tercel. The Tercel required only two years of protective nurturing before being launched as its own separate line. And after a single season of solo work, the rear-drive Corolla again was joined by a front-drive marquemate. The new 4-door variant, accounting for nearly 80% of all U.S. Corolla sales for 1984, indicated the direction in which future generations went.
