01985 Chevrolet Sprint Test Drive
The Suzuki-built Sprint, marketed as the Cultus in Japan introduced early in 1984, was available only in 16 western states and demand outstripped supply. Not only were dealers getting over sticker for the vehicle, and East Coast dealers were sending car carriers to the West Coast, buying whatever Sprints they could cajole out of western Dealers and selling them at inflated prices back home. The Sprint was powered by a 48-horsepower 1.0-liter 3-cylinder transverse engine and was available only as a 2-door hatchback. Although the suggested retail price was under $5000, dealers were getting almost anything they wanted for the car.
