One of the world’s sleekest production passenger sedans, the 1985 Merkur XR4Ti was the first of a new brand of limited-production, world-class specialty cars from Ford of Germany to be offered in the U.S. by Lincoln-Mercury at more than 800 Merkur dealers nationwide. Imported by Lincoln-Mercury to compete with BMW and similar European vehicles, it featured a high performance, electronically fuel-injected 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, and a design centered around intense driver satisfaction, proven by the ergonomically sound layout of the instrument panel and controls. European-type roadability and high level of standard equipment were among other features of the new sport sedan, including a unique bi-plane air spoilers on the rear deck provided superior stability and performance at highway speeds.
