In addition to the new engine for 1985, there were a couple new players in the AMC passenger car lineup, with the more interesting being the Alliance convertible. American Motors first ragtop in 16 years was the product of a joint development program between AMC and ASC Inc. The convertible was built in Alliance L and DL trims at AMC’s Kenosha, Wisconsin, production facility. Standard equipment on both drop tops included the 1.7-liter OHC inline four and a power top.
