01985 Renault Alliance Test Drive
A new engine has been added for passenger car applications in 1985. Renault Alliance and Encore buyers were able to order the new 1.7-liter inline 4 as an extra cost option in most models. The 105cid powerplant, the first OHC engine for a domestically produce Renault, made 78 horsepower at 5000rpm, up 23 over the 1.4-liter OHV inline four that continues as the base engine in both the Alliance and Encore. The new powerplant was essentially a federalized version of the Euro 1.7 added to the Renault 9 and 11 models in 1984. Bendix single point throttle-body fuel injection replaced the 2bbl Weber downdraft carb of the Continental engine. Our version of the 1721cc engine had its compression ration knocked down a half point to 9.5:1 to help cut NOx emissions.
