01985 Toyota Corolla GT-S Test Drive
If more was better, you could bet your valve lapping tools Toyota was on the right track. In 1984, and obviously under big brothers watchful eye, Toyota saw fit to introduce a new line of Corollas. most notable of this new line was a pair of all new front drive 4 door sedans, one notch back, one hatch back – take your pick.
Not so notable was a pair of rear drive two doors, dubbed the Corolla SR5 sports, also available in notchback, hatchback – take your pick. Even though a Corolla sport was blessed with a new skin and trim,the car itself was pretty much the same as its 1983 sibling. The all new look featured a trendy down sloping front hood and retractable headlights, integral front air dam, and a hiked rear deck. A very nice looking package indeed, but considering what lay underneath, not unlike a sheep in wolfs clothing.
At last the gods smiled upon Toyota. The boys in Japan decided to take a shot and see if the American public was ready for a 16-valve 7500RPM street machine. See, those suspicions about all that sheet-metal work were well founded. Sure enough, Toyota released for sale in the US a 16-valve, 4-cylinder rear drive Corolla – in sports Coupe and lift-back form, for around $10K, and it was quite a car.
