01986 Ford Aerostar Test Drive
With the introduction of the Ford Aerostar for 1986, the minivan lineup was complete. Each of the big Detroit builders now had an entry in this field, and the competition in the showrooms for market dominance was amusing to watch for the coming year. The Aerostar was up against some pretty well established and successful adversaries, Chevy Astro, Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager, Toyota Van, and the familiar
Volkswagen Vanagon. Undoubtedly, the stiffest contest was amongst the three domestics. Like it’s competition, the Aerostar could be had as a utilitarian single-seat windowless van or in the five or seven passenger wagon versions. Also similar to other wagons, the seats were removable to accommodate a huge load of cargo.
For being a latecomer to the field, it seemed to have everything the competitors offered and no glaring errors of omission or major flaws.
