Imagine something the size and weight of a J-car with 185 hp and 205 lb-ft of torque and you’ve got some idea of what kind of embarrassment the Biturbo caused to all sorts of pseudo go-fast hardware already on the street. With 0-60 times of 7.5 seconds, and the quarter in 15.6 at 85mph, the only cars that could touch it to 60 mph were the Corvette, 928 S, Mustang GT & SVO, and the 300ZX Turbo. Pretty heady company, especially when you consider the technological or displacement advantage of the aforementioned cars.
It seemed as if the people at Maserati were not satisfied playing second fastest to anyone, so they decided to squeeze a few more cavalli out of the Biturbo. They did, successfully, and the Biturbo E, with air to air intercooler, now stood as the third fastest non gray market car tested at the time.
Apparently you could only get the E model in a two tone paint job with either a red or silver upper and gray lower. There’s also a set of headrests, fog lights in the bumper, and a badge at the rear saying “Liquid intercooled.” Since Maserati only brought 200 E models into the U.S. each had a number plqaue on the dash just below the radio, bearing the legend “Biturbo E # (whatever).”
