Daimler-Benz found more and more of its products falling into the hands of a select group of aftermarket tuning firms in the early 80s. For the most part, Mercedes turned a blind eye to the specialists who were squeezing additional horsepower out of and larger engines into MB’s intermediate and S-Class models. But when the kinderbenzW-201, or 190 series, models debuted late in 1982, few outside Daimler-Benz’s board of management were aware that in less than two years, Mercedes itself would offer the ultimate ‘breathed on” Benz.
