For 1986, the Grand Am SE made the cut in both 2-door and 4-door versions with five monochrome exterior color choices, composite aero-headlamps, and redundant radio controls. (Like the 6000, no ABS) Pontiac had high hopes for the Grand Am SE, especially the new for ’86 4-door model, with sales projections on par with the 6000 STE. What’s interesting about the Grand Am from a styling point of view was that it debuted as a 2-door coupe only, although the original design was laid out as a 4-door coupe. Had it been conceived as a sedan, the Grand Am would have had a substantially taller roofline profile. On a purely subjective level, the 4-door configuration retained the low profile and seemed more natural, more aesthetically pleasing than the 2-door, offering a more formal look along with a vast improvement in backseat ingress and egress.
