With 16 candles on its birthday cake, the 1986 Toyota Celica left its Mustang-inspired heritage behind, taking on front-wheel-drive and given a refreshingly smooth and cliche’-free body design. It was a new car in every respect and , most importantly for Toyota’s marketing strategy, and no longer shared its structure nor its components with the Supra.
Studied in 1982 and designed during 1983-1984, the 4th generation Celica started with a clean sheet of paper, although naturally based on the marketing positions and pricing structure developed by its predecessors.
