Known as the Type 2 in factory nomenclature, in its 36 years, the VW van developed a mystique, a loyal following, a literature of lore that put it up there with the Beetle as the most beloved of all Volkswagen’s. The boxy, slab sided bus underwent extensive evolution over the years but it still retained its unique character as an entirely useful vehicle. Perennially underpowered, with the aerodynamics of a brick, the VW bus nevertheless survived beyond 1986; it was the first recipient of VW’s viscous coupling all-wheel-drive system.
