01986 Yugo GV Review
Malcom Bricklin’s tiny International Automobile Importers no longer handled the Bertone (Fiat X1/9) and the Pininfarina (Fiat Spider). Plans to distribute the cars directly to the dealers, thus lopping $2K-$3K off the price and freeing IAI for its new project, the Yugo.
The Yugo was a small econobox built around front-wheel-drive Fiat 128 mechanicals by Zastava, in Yugoslavia. It was developed by Fiat and Pininfarina in 1975, had a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 55 hp and would sell for less than the Chevrolet Sprint. That made the Yugo the least expensive new automobile you were able to buy in America.
