This is the Acura Legend. Honda’s version of the XX car jointly developed with Austin Rover of Britain, designed to take Honda out of the battle with Maxima and Cressida and into serious contention with BMW and Audi. At first glance, the Legend looked little more than a sized up Accord. But Legend was distinct with its own flush headlamp nose and a larger chromed grille, while the fender flares were a novelty in the class.
Under the skin, Legend followed Prelude with double wishbones at the front and struts at the rear. Honda would have preferred wishbones all around, like the Accord, but this was one small compromise to partner with Austin-Rover.
Quality was a big word at Honda in developing the Legend, with heavier gauge steel than usual, and high grade interior.
Honda was certainly no stranger to awards. The Honda Civic for 1980, and the CRX in 1984 winning Motor Trends Import Car of the Year, and in its first full year of its existence, the Acura division of Honda captured the award again with the Legend Coupe.
