The buzzword at Buick was de-proliferation, the simple strategy for 1987 was “to sell more cars with fewer models”. There were no all-new product introductions this year, but Buick executives chose to describe this as a cloud with a silver lining. 1987 was a chance, they said “to improve customer satisfaction, performance, convenience, and selection”.
Those same executives talked repetitively about “trying to lower the age of the Buick buyer”. The motorsports program was part of that effort. So was the T-Type handling package, with its leather wrapped steering wheel, Eagle GT blackwall tires, aluminum wheels, and Gran Touring suspension offering firmer shock valving, more beefy anti-roll bars, higher rate bushings, and more direct steering. For the first time, all the components of the T Package would be optionally available on each Buick model, including a “showcase” LeSabre T-Type coupe.
On many of its other models, Buick would offer Touring options, as well as interior and exterior sport packages. This was a manufacturer that positively encouraged factory customization in other words, a manufacturer seeking to appeal to a wider variety of buyers without widening its basic model range.
