Ford’s full-size heavy weight hauler had a new face for 1987, but still kept its look of strength and power. Flush-mounted headlights outside and a new instrument panel inside were the major changes from 1986. Three engines were available, a 4.9-liter inline six, a 5-liter V8 and a 5.8-liter V8. Some say the 4.9-liter six, which runs as smoothly as a V8, was better in delivering low-speed torque, while the V8’s ran with more authority at high speeds. Fuel injection would be standard for 1988, and ABS rear brakes optional. Transmission choices were a manual 4-speed, and automatics, 3- or 4-speeds.
