Almost as exotic as the Sbarro Windhawk, though a production vehicle, was the Lamborghini LM002. Like the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, this began life as a military project: for the US Army, it was powered by rear-mounted V8 engines by Chrysler and AMC. In 1982 it was redesigned with a front mounted Lamborghini V12 engine, as used in the Countach. It was a massive vehicle standing on 16-inch wheels, giving a ground clearance of 11.5 inches.
Instead of the usual estate car, the body was a four-door saloon with luggage space behind. Overall weight was 6500 lbs, about 50% more than a Range Rover, and top speed was 125 mpg, surely a record for a cross country vehicle. On test, a military LM004 with 7.2-liter engine climbed a gradient of 70 degrees. The LM002 had 4WD and a 5-speed gearbox. Its 1988 price was only slightly cheaper than the Countach.
