01987 Nissan Pulsar NX SE Test Drive
The all new 1987 Nissan Pulsar NX was a mixture of economy, sportiness, high performance and innovation geared for the 90s and new marketplace. Aside from its striking mockery of the Acura Integra’s face and design of its alloy wheels, the Pulsar had a refreshing ambience and a heavier, substantial look about it (although some would have difficulty with the abrupt rear window/hatch configuration.)
Based on a new suspension system, the front-drive Pulsar was equipped with the common 1.6-liter engine in the base XE edition. The SE performance version sported a 16-valve cylinder head and 113 horsepower; the powerplant was complemented by 14-inch wheels and 195/60 tires, a rear anti-roll bar. Though a few bought the Pulsar for those attributes, most wanted it for the versatility of its T-top roof, fold-down rear seat and removable rear hatch. In addition, a square-back canopy could be installed in place of the hatch lid, giving the car more hauling space and a completely different appearance. The interior was rescaled for the new assault and included a redesigned instrument panel, a large center console and a folding rear seat.
All of this was commendable on the part of Nissan, but moot; the Pulsar NX sold on its looks alone and its popular history with female buyers. The bold, masculine aura of the 1987 NX beckoned the opposite gender with new substance and new meaning.
