To create a precursor of coming attractions, Oldsmobile engineers dropped the new 2.3-liter, sixteen-valve Quad 4 engine into a couple of different cars. In the FE3-X (formerly a Calais), the engineers mated a 150-bhp production engine to the new Getrag/Munci five-speed, heavily modified the suspension, and added 17.0-by 9.5-inch BBS wheels within 275/40VR-17 Goodyear tires. In a special gymkhana on Black Lake, the Calais FE3-X was transformed. Experimentors also lowered a 210-horsepower Quad 4-Turbo into a Regency Brougham. A sterling change – from soft and sluggish to soft and fast.
