Two specialty cars and a new 4-cylinder engine topped the Oldsmobile introductions for 1987. Again, this was a GM division that talked of “targeting new product entries toward younger buyers” and, again the new entries were nothing more than variations of existing themes.
Toronado Trofeo’s 3.8-liter V-6 had new roller lifters, with fractionally improvised performance. The new Trofeo version, an attempt to bolster sagging Toronado sales, had its own grille, hidden headlights in gloss black, rocker panel extensions, black frog valance with fog lamps and other detailed cosmetic differences, including standard leather bucket seats, dual exhaust outlets, FE3 suspension on P215/60R15 rubber. Olds said handling was a match for many European performance cars. This was a serious driver’s car.
