Two new models and a V12 engine highlighted the 1988 BMW line. The flagship 750iL was one of the new cars, and certainly was the most visible. It carried a new 5.0-liter 12-cylinder, 300-horsepower engine. Built in a 4-door sedan version only, U.S. editions of the 750i were 4.5 inches longer than the 735i sedan for additional rear-seat room, and carried an “L” designation for long wheelbase. The $70,000 sedan had an electronic throttle that eliminated the mechanical linkage between the accelerator pedal and the engine throttle.
