Honda was tremendously successful in scoping out the potential for marketable cars in the US. The firms best-selling Accord line accounted for over 337k units in America for 1987, making it the third hottest nameplate in the country. For 1988, Honda bolstered the existing 2-door hatchback and 4-door sedan lineup with a stylish new model, the Coupe. Conceived by Honda R&D North America and developed in conjunction with the parent company, the new Accord was exclusively produced in Honda’s Marysville, Ohio facility.Besides offering an appealing choice to US buyers looking for an affordable personal luxury car, the Accord Coupe had the distinction of being the first “Japanese” automobile to be exported back to the homeland.
I remember a good number of these on the road back in the day. Whether it’s coupe, hatchback, or sedan, the 1986-89 Accords roamed the roads for years and even a few decades. I loved the styling overall, except for the pop-up headlights on North American versions.
