1988 Mercury Tracer Test Drive

This front wheel drive sub-compact was launched in Canada in July 1986 in 3 and 5 door sedan versions and in 1987 in the United States with the addition of the wagon. It is directly derived from the Mazda 323 from which it differs in only a few details. In its replacement role for the new defunct Lynx and its competition with Chevy’s Nova and Dodge Colt, the Tracer is a talented candidate, with a number of advantages on its side. With only a few improvements in its conception, it would have been an outright winner.

I’d like to find this era Tracer (w/ a 5 speed of course). The last one I saw was probably in ’99 or ’00.

Hey Greg, This car Competed with the 1987′ Nova, I Never owned One of these but I Love my 87′ Nova and If Had the choice between the two I Still think i would take Nova.

These were very popular in Australia & New Zealand where it was sold as the Ford Laser. Today, I’m so glad that the U.S could now buy Fords that are very similar to the ones sold elsewhere around the world such as the Focus and Fiesta.
