1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais International Series Test Drive

Oldsmobile’s version of GM’s N-body compact saw little changes cosmetically for 1988, but look under the hood for the divisions new Quad 4 engine. This fuel injected 2.3-liter 4-cylinder featured dual chain-driven overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, hydraulic lifters, direct-fire injection, electronic spark control and a 9.5:1 compression ratio, delivering 150-bhp at 5200 rpm and 160 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm (redline was 7000). For 1988, it was also available in the Pontiac Grand Am and Buick Skylark. In the Calais, Olds tuned the Quad 4 to deliver good fuel economy and good mid-range performance. With the 5-speed GM/Getrag gearbox, 0-60 mph took a mere 8.5 seconds, while the EPA rating were 26 mpg city/35 mpg highway. This lively twincam unit still suffered from a lack of low-end power, particularly with the optional 3-speed automatic.
