Peugeot’s second model in the states was the compact 405 sedan, which entered production in Europe the summer of 1987. U.S. exports began the following spring, midway through the 1988 model year, when the car began doing battle against the Renault Medallion and similar size Japanese imports. Slotted below the 505 in size and price, the 405 shared the front drive platform of the Citroen BX, with Peugeot mechanical, replacing Citroen’s hydro-pneumatic suspension. The Mi-16 was the top version of the 405 range, which was to be the base of the future onslaught of the French manufacturer on the U.S. market.
