71987 Pontiac Pursuit Concept Car
The Pursuit was an aggressive, sleek new concept car from Pontiac. The dramatic design is an experimental blending of sleek aerodynamic forms and functional innovations.
The rounded roofline of the Pontiac Pursuit flowed smoothly into compound-curved window surfaces which wrapped gracefully around the car. Its fully-removable, one-piece roof panel provided a new interpretation for the open air enthusiast.
The flush wheel skirts offered functional aerodynamic advantages, enclosing the wheels in sleeves which open and close as the tires urn to negotiate a corner. The unique outward appearance resulted in significant reductions in turbulence, which should improve mileage and reduce wind noise.
The lower body area of the Pursuit revealed the rocker panel and underbody as an interesting integration of form and function. The plan view tuck in the body surfaces just forward of the rear wheels helped allow for easier rear seat entry and this form was reflected in the very structure of the car. Its bottom breather lower grille screen was positioned to provide airflow up into the engine’s cooling system.
A light bar extending across the front of the car reflects a merging of headlights and fog-lamps into a single, flush, full-width unit. The distinctive V-crest centered on the light bar confirmed its Pontiac identity.
Dual hood scoops served as air intakes for the inter-cooler and air cleaner. Aerodynamically flush’mounted windshield wiper arms were set into a black panel as the base of the windshield
The uniquely located door handles and pushbutton entry code panel were located in a shape which extended rearward to form the decklid surface. The taillights were integrated into this shape, as flush mounted, multifunctional units. They emit all red light during night driving and during braking., amber at the outboard ends of the lamps for turn signals and emergency flashers, and white at the inboard ends of the lamps for the backup lighting mode. The CHMSL was a Pontiac crest placed between the taillights.
OH YEAH PONTIAC PURSUIT IS THE CONEPT CAR FROM THE LATE 80S
Certainly fun to look back at future!
Actually, didn’t 4 wheel steering make it to production? The Honda Prelude, and later on, GM’s Quadrasteer system on their trucks.
Yes, Mazda also had a 4ws system. I have actual MW road tests of both the prelude and 626 4ws coming soon!
The Nissan Altima and Z’s has 4 wheel steering as well. I think it is called Super Toe Control or something.
I believe you are correct, however on the current models, it is more of a passive system, opposed to an active one!
Lets not forget four wheel steering on the the Mitsubishi 3000gt
