1989: 1992 Grand Prix STE?

z125a

In 1989, Pontiac designers were looking into the future and saw the Grand Prix. Imagine if these changes were actually made. The headlamps stretched laterally and toward the vehicle center-line. A nose that sloped lower than the 1988 model, giving quite a futuristic look.  A larger prominent twin port air intake and driving lamps were scheduled.  Revised styling said to be influenced by the Infiniti Q45 sedan. Plans were in place to adapt the 6000 STE’s all wheel drive system to the GM10, almost certainly for exclusive use by an STE sedan. Also believed was Pontiac’s McLaren-turbocharged 3.1-liter V6 would continue in the STE even with AWD.

I remember this.. I do not know where you find these old stories, but they are always interesting to see. I remember the Grand Prix STE. It looked nothing like this drawing. It was sedan only. Some of the features did appear like the AWD and the engine. They did update the front end on the coupe. Thank you for sharing.

I don’t think the Grand Prix STE had AWD like the 6000 STE had. It had the N/A 3.1L or the turbo 3.1 in 1990, but then the 3.1 Turbo was replaced by the 3.4L 24 Valve afterwards. I worked with someone a long time ago that had a ’91 with the 3.4L. I always thought it was a neat version, indeed rare too
