Keen to prompt its credo, “Holding the lead through technology,” Audi continued to work on this mid-engined supercoupe, which one insider described as “Ingolstadt’s answer to the Porsche 959 and the Peugeot Oxia.” The Audi two-seater, which rode atop a 100-inch wheelbase, had a speed-sensitive rear spoiler and a dash-mounted video screen that revealed obstructions behind the car. Two power plants were under consideration: a 375-hp, turbocharged and intercooled, 2.5-liter in-line five and a 490-hp version of Audi’s existing 3.6-liter V-8, bored out to a larger displacement. Audi engineers debated whether the engine should be mounted longitudinally or transversely, if it is the latter, the use of four-wheel drive – understandably Audi’s preference- would be far more costly and complex.
