1989 Audi 200 Test Drive – The Name Changed, Did the Reputation?
In an effort to halt the sales slide of the 5000, Audi rechristened them. The 5000S became the 100 and the 5000CD turbo the 200. They retained the efficiently designed galvanized steel body work, although there were some styling changes at the front end in order to differentiate the two lines.
In spite of everything that was written, the Audi’s didn’t give any more problems than other similarly sophisticated cars, especially in the previous three years. Nevertheless, their sales were still affected by the sudden acceleration “story”, but lots of other cars were implicated in this type of incident and nothing was really proven. Based on the body and mechanicals of the 5000 S, the new 100/200 was at the top of its class, whether it be with front-wheel-drive, or all-wheel-drive, with an atmospheric or turbo engine.
