Astro, sold by Chevrolet dealers, and Safari, sold by GM dealers with GMC truck franchise, were identical rear-drive compact vans except  for their names and series designations.  Base prices were slightly higher on GMC models, while option prices were the same.

Anti-lock rear brakes were a new standard feature for 1989 on all versions. Braking pressure to the rear wheels was modulated by the ABS to keep the rear wheels from locking before the vehicle stopped, to prevent skids.  A new electric speedometer was added to work with the anti-lock system.

Power steering , a front stabilizer bar, and 27-gallon fuel tank, all of which were optional in 1988, were now standard for 1989 on passenger models., as were shoulder belts for all outboard seating positions except the one next to the sliding door.  Cargo models gained power steering as standard.  The standard gauge cluster now included fuel, volt, oil pressure, and water tep gauges, and a trip odometer.  A sport suspension package that was promised in 1988 but not delivered was promised again for mid-1989; it included gas-shock absorbers, rear stabilizer bar and 245/60HR15 tires, and was known as the RS.
