One of Detroit’s brightest 1989 stars was an all new Ford Thunderbird. It retained rear-wheel drive but gained an all independent suspension. The 210 horsepower supercharged SC coupe topped the line at $19,823. Though it was a bit heavier than planned, the 1989 Thunderbird SC delivered grand touring performance to rival a BMW, with an easy 6-second 0-60 mph. Alas, total T-bird sales fell to just under 115,000.
