01989 Porsche 944 Turbo S Test Drive
Sorry 911 fans, Porsche’s 944 Turbo S was capable of showing your favorite vehicle its taillights in practically any situation. Porsche quoted a 5.5 second 0-60 time for the Turbo S, and 162 mph top speed, higher than the 911 Turbo.
At 247 hp, the 151 cubic inch inline 4-cylinder in the Turbo S 944 offered a full 30 more than 944 Turbo. Higher boost was the key element here, and the chassis was beefed up to cope with the new found HP. Springs and shocks in the McPherson Strut front/trailing arm rear suspension were stiffened, and the anti-lock braking system from the 928S were installed. Forged alloy wheels carried larger VR rated tires.

These changes made the 944 Turbo S the easiest Porsche to drive at speed. Its relatively low price, was but a happy coincidence because this was a car that belonged with the superstars.
