01989 Subaru Justy ECVT Test Drive
Restyled and rebopped, the 1989 Justy became the first car offered in america with an Electronically Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). The optional gearbox, if you could call it that, was shiftless, adjusting itself to whatever conditions demanded. The baby Subaru’s engine was a transversely mounted 3-cylinder with two intakes and one exhaust valve per cylinder. That made it a 9-valve “three”, the knowledge of which could well win some automotive trivia games today. It displaced 1.2-liters and generated a lively 66 horsepower. To go with the performance this produced, there were lots of trim packages and options to make this into something more than just an econobox.
