01989: Two US Fun-mobiles
Though it looked like a moon buggy from an old science fiction movie, remember this: in 1987, Pontiac showed the TranSport concept van, and it went into production almost intact. The Stinger was all-wheel-drive, had a fully independent, pneumatic active suspension, anti-lock brakes, and a 3-liter 16-valve engine reportedly producing 170 hp. GM’s cross-town rival Ford, reciprocated with the ‘Splash’, looking like the kind of outrageous show car normally viewed at the spectacular Tokyo Show, the exotic, almost military Ford Splash was an immediate Motown favorite. The Splash was AWD and offered driver-adjustable variable ride height. It’s design was a summer project by four students from Detroit’s Center for Creative Studies.
