Less than a year after they’d gotten used to the threat posed by Acura’s NSX, European super-car builders were dealt another blow by Mitsubishi. With some help from Chrysler, the Hiroshima based company was developing an all new super car, capable of more than 160 mph.
The new car was believed to be based on a widened version of the Galant platform, though you’d never guess. Unlike the NSX, which was mistakably reminiscent of Ferrari’s pretty 328, the new Mitsu was daringly original in shape. It borrowed heavily form Mitsubishi’s record breaking HSR show car, which meant it was to be long and low and racy, distinguished by a curvaceous nose, shallow hood-line, bubble shaped cockpit canopy, , low slung rear deck, and wide, muscular haunches. Sources originally said it would wear Starion/Conquest badges, partly formed by their design staff in Japan, and studio in California.
