Having enviously watched the fireworks surrounding the launch of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Volkswagen was said to have dusted off several drawings of its own roadsters, notably this contemporary Karmann Ghia. The car was based on the Volkswagen Cabriolet platform, basically a Rabbit fitted with VW’s ubiquitous SOHC, 1.8-liter engine. Sporting many styling cues lifted from the original Karmann Ghia, a car with a high nostalgia quotient for many buyers. If it would have gone into production, the two seater would have replaced the existing VW Cabriolet by 1991, and like the Cabriolet, carry a price of about $15,000.
