Lincoln-Mercury updated its hot-selling Sable with a ‘racy’ new version for 1996. The car rode atop a chassis with a slightly longer wheelbase-a platform it obviously shared with the Ford Taurus. Engines would be V-6’s but obviously a future V8 fit as well.
Though far off from what we received, it was expected, and more significantly to have a body made of plastic. Ford was experimenting with a Taurus whose body and floorpan consisted of five fiberglass-reinforced plastic moldings joined by adhesive. These pieces would replace some 400 steel parts required in the original Taurus/Sable.
