Ford’s slugging percentage was beginning to reach Ruthian proportions, with a string of hits that commenced in late 1986 with the Taurus/Sable, followed by the Continental, the Probe, the Thunderbird/Cougar, and the company’s next winner, the 1990 Lincoln Town Car.
Heading into the 1990 model year, things were otherwise relatively quiet in Dearborn as the home team prepared to unveil yet another redesign series, all 90’Escort and Tracer.
Indeed, Fords only fumble was the twice aborted launch of the Australian built Capri, the sporty 2 + 2 roadster that was finally introduced in the States.
Whereas the Town Car represented its sole major product unveiling, Ford provided a few tweaks here and there to the rest of the line: a new police package for the Taurus, a V6 option in the Probe, a revised transmission and instrument panel for the Scorpio, plus several new additions of the Aerostar minivan. The Aerostar also shared a new 4.0 V6 with the Ranger pickup. The Escort and Tracer were carried over with few changes until their successors arrived early 1990. Likewise the imported Festiva and the Tempo/Topaz twins, which were not slated for major overhauls before 1995. The Thunderbird and the Cougar, which made their debut 10 months prior, also remained unaltered for 1990. But,then, why tamper with a winning formula?
